LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - "No Country For Old Men," Ethan and Joel Coen's 20th-century take on the western, won top prize at the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday, positioning the movie for glory at the Oscars next month.

Penn's movie came away empty handed.

In addition to the ensemble nod, Spanish actor Javier Bardem won a second trophy for "No Country for Old Men" by taking the best supporting actor award on a night of traditional Hollywood glamour, with added emotion over the death last week of actor Heath Ledger.

British actor Daniel Day-Lewis, who won the best actor award for his role as a greedy oil baron in "There Will Be Blood," dedicated his trophy to Ledger.

Missy Elliott cooking up new tunes

Reuters

NEW YORK (Billboard) - Rap star Missy Elliott has popped up here and there in the past few years (namely, in a Doritos ad campaign), but there hasn't been much in the way of new music from her since 2005's "The Cookbook."

Now the wait is over, in the form of the new songs "Ching-a-Ling" and "Shake Your Pom Pom," which will appear on Atlantic's "Step Up 2 the Streets" soundtrack (February 5) and Elliott's new album (likely due in May).

At No. 57, "Ching-a-Ling" is currently the top debut on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

Elliott is hoping to reunite with producer Timbaland, who has been behind some of her biggest hits but wasn't much of a factor on "The Cookbook."

Beckham visits Sierra Leone as UNICEF envoy

Reuters

FREETOWN (Reuters) - English soccer star David Beckham met with children in Sierra Leone on Saturday as part of his role as a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF, the U.N. child agency.

The LA Galaxy midfielder arrived in West Africa late on Friday on a two day trip to a country struggling to recover from a 1991-2002 civil war.

Infant and maternal mortality are among the highest in the world in the former British colony, where roads, schools and hospitals were devastated by a conflict notorious for images of drugged child soldiers raping and killing civilians.

"He's here as a guest of UNICEF," the charity's spokeswoman Alison Parker told Reuters by telephone. "He's covering programs on child survival in Sierra Leone; visiting a number of UNICEF programs in the northern part of the country on malaria prevention and immunization."

The former England captain traveled beyond the hot hilly coastal capital Freetown on Saturday to deprived rural areas in the north of the country, once held by rebels during the war.

More than 50,000 people were killed during the civil war and thousands more were left mutilated by rebels, who hacked limbs, noses and ears off their victims.

Youth unemployment runs at two-thirds and football is the most popular sport, played on dirt pitches by roadsides across the tropical country. Many taxis in Freetown bear huge stickers devoted to Manchester United, Beckham's old team.

Sierra Leone's footballing talent was highlighted this month after Watford's 19-year-old Sierra Leonean midfielder Al Bangura, who faced deportation, won the right to remain in Britain.

Oprah Winfrey getting her own TV network

By DAVID BAUDER, AP Television Writer Tue Jan 15, 4:07 PM ET

NEW YORK - Oprah Winfrey is getting her own TV network. OWN — for Oprah Winfrey Network — will debut next year in nearly 70 million homes with cable and satellite, part of a deal announced Tuesday with Discovery Communications. It will replace the Discovery Health network.

The announcement builds a media empire that already includes the top-rated TV talk show, a magazine, a satellite radio network, a Web site and TV movies made under her banner.

"This is an evolution of what I've been able to do every day," Winfrey said. "I will now have the opportunity to do this 24 hours a day on a platform that goes on forever."

She will be chairwoman of the network, owned 50-50 by Discovery and her company, Harpo Productions Inc. In return for taking over a network already operated by Discovery, Winfrey gives half ownership of the Oprah.com Web site.

Discovery owns 13 networks in the United States, including Discovery, TLC and Animal Planet. Discovery Health is one of the least successful, and company President and CEO David Zaslav was looking for ideas about what to do with it when his wife handed him a copy of Oprah's magazine.

He approached Winfrey about a partnership, coincidentally shortly after she had come upon an entry for her diary dated May 24, 1992, when she wrote about her idea for creating her own network.

"David came and really spoke about the vision I'd been having for 15 years," she said. "It felt like, `I can't believe you're saying this.'"

Zaslav said that Discovery's core mission is knowledge and curiosity and "this is right in our sweet spot."

Winfrey envisions the programming dealing with issues such as money, health, weight, relationships and raising children. Some of the stable of in-house experts she uses on "Oprah" and the XM satellite radio station might be expected to contribute.

While Winfrey will be the face of the new network, she won't have much of a presence, at least at first. She is under contract to continue on "Oprah" through May 2011, a deal that prohibits the use of reruns on her own network.

After that, she could continue her show on broadcast TV or do it for the cable network, and may reach a deal to allow reruns on OWN. Taking "Oprah" off broadcast TV, however, could reduce its visibility and in turn make the cable network less valuable.

Winfrey said she needed to decide this fall whether to continue her syndicated show beyond 2011.

Winfrey was an early and visible investor in the development of Oxygen, a network for women that was created in the 1990s. She said she quickly determined that Oxygen "did not reflect my voice" and she removed herself from the company's board after a few meetings.

"The difference here is I will have editorial control and there is a vision for what I want to do with this network," she said.

Oxygen was also a startup in an industry where it's becoming harder to introduce new networks, while OWN will have the built-in advantage of already being in nearly two-thirds of the nation's homes with television.

Jessica Simpson Not Seen at Cowboys Game

By DAVID JIMENEZ, Associated Press Writer

IRVING, Texas - Don't blame the Jessica Jinx this time.

One month after fans considered her attendance the reason for a bad game by her boyfriend, Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, the pop singer-actress wasn't believed to be at Texas Stadium on Sunday when Dallas was upset 21-17 by the New York Giants.

Then again, folks might have a new reason for blaming her — those touchy-feely pictures of the couple cavorting in Mexico last weekend that surfaced soon after and created quite a stir.

"I'll take the blame and I'll take the criticism here," Romo said. "That's why we're put in these positions."

There were plenty of blonde women in the stands wearing pink Romo jerseys Sunday, but the woman who made them famous wasn't believed to be among them. Her publicist said earlier in the week she was working on a new album and would not be at the game.

On Dec. 16, Simpson proudly displayed her shirt to television cameras during the Cowboys' game against Philadelphia. Romo injured his throwing thumb and had one of his worst games of the season that day. What they didn't know — or didn't care about — was that she'd attended other Cowboys games and he played just fine.

Then came the fuss about Romo's trip to Mexico leading up to the Giants game.

"I don't live with regrets," Romo said. "I'm content in my own skin. If I try and be a good person and I'm strong enough in my faith, then I feel like I'm doing it the right way."

Romo's teammates believed the trip was a non-issue — especially star receiver Terrell Owens.

Owens, who jokingly piled on those blaming Simpson for Romo's woes after the Eagles game, broke down in tears when he met with reporters after the game.

"This is not about Tony. You guys can point the finger at him, you can talk about the vacation, and if you do that, it's really unfair," Owens said, his voice cracking. "It's really unfair. That's my teammate. That's my quarterback. You guys do that, it's not fair. We lost as a team. We lost as a team, man."
